Illinois has loads of safe communities and, for teenagers, it feels like nothing “cool” ever happens here. Despite that safe feeling, there are some legitimately dangerous (even deadly) places in Illinois. Here are the top 10.

  1. Chicago

Roman Boed/Flickr Being the largest city, Chicago is naturally going to have the most danger. Shootings are 50% higher than last year in Chicago. Fortunately, you’re much more likely to be shot if you have a criminal background. Lesson: stay away from crime.

  1. La Grange Road Ramp, I-80

Doug Kerr/Flickr This is one of the most deadly traffic areas in the entire state. It has 56 accidents a year.

  1. Rockford

vxla/Flickr Rockford has 19 murders last year. It is common knowledge that there is a lot of crime in this town, despite major efforts to cut it down.

  1. Central Illinois

katie hargrave/Flickr That’s right, we’re putting all of central Illinois. It’s tornado alley. Other than tornadoes, you’re probably okay.

  1. East St. Louis

Paul Sableman/Flickr East St. Louis inherits some of the crime from actual St. Louis–high on the arson list, shootings, and property crimes.

  1. Harvey

Adam Moss/Flickr Harvey was named by the FBI to be the most dangerous town in all of Illinois. You are the most likely to be the victim of violent crime here.

  1. Decatur

J. Crockett/Wikimedia Decatur is the Illinois town with the most DUIs. You can probably avoid your risk of being in an accident by staying off the roads late at night or in the early morning hours.

  1. Danville

Nyttend/Flickr Danville is routinely in the top 5 of most dangerous towns in Illinois, as far as your likelihood of being the victim of a violent crime goes. It is hard to believe that Dick van Dyke grew up here.

  1. Springfield

Eovart Cacier/Flickr Springfield was #3 on the list of most likely to be the victim of violent crime. There is also the possibility of tornadoes. And then there’s the danger of being in the middle of political nonsense.

  1. Chicago Heights

dennisyerger84/Flickr Chicago Heights has one of the highest incidences of arson in the entire state.

Do you live in a deadly or dangerous area of Illinois? What additions would you make?
