Turn your eyes to the nighttime sky, because you don’t want to miss these four celestial events in Missouri this year. You might even want to add them to your calendar so you don’t forget to head outdoors for a one-of-a-kind show in the sky.
- Lyrids – April
Flickr/bgwashburn For more than 2,700 years, stargazers have turned their gaze upward in April to catch the Lyrids meteor shower. One of the oldest known meteor showers, the Lyrids will be visible from April 15 to April 29, 2022, with the peak night set for April 22. You may be able to see between 10 and 20 meteors each hour during Lyrid’s peak. Keep an eye out for the trail of “dust” the meteor leaves behind, too.
- Bootid – June
Facebook/The American Meteor Society The June Bootids usually occur at the end of the month each year. This year, mark your calendar for June 25-29, 2022. However, the peak night is set for June 27. How many meteors you can expect to see each hour is really anyone’s guess. Unfortunately, the Bootids are some of the most unpredictable of all meteor showers.
- Perseid – August

Keep your eyes to the sky from July 14 to September 1, although the peak is expected to be on August 13. On a moonless peak night, you can see as many as 90 meteors streak across the sky. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the trail of “dust” they leave behind, too.
- Geminid – December
Flickr/Cliff Kimura The year closes out with the Geminid meteor showers, which take place between December 4-17, 2022. However, the peak date is December 14. On a moonless peak night, as many as 120 meteors may streak across the sky.
