There’s no denying how much we love the spring and summer in Maine, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have room in our hearts for the colder months. If we’re being honest, when the weather turns chilly, we mostly enjoy spending time inside staying cozy and warm. But this year we’re doing things a bit differently. Instead of avoiding the cold, we plan on having fun with it! Here are just a few of the fun things to do in the winter.
- Winter horseback riding

- Stroll along the water’s edge

- Enjoy ice skating
The Rink at Thompson’s Point / Google Gliding around on a sheet of ice might feel treacherous for those who don’t embrace winter the way Mainers do, but we can assure everyone that it’s great fun. There are seasonal rinks to enjoy outdoors throughout the state, but one of our favorites is the Rink at Thompson’s Point. You can learn more about it here. Thompson’s Point, Portland, ME 04102, USA
- Have a thrill snowmobiling
Northern Outdoors / Facebook In some parts of Maine, a snowmobile (or, “sled”) is a vital form of transportation to places like school and work. But in other places, this is just a fun thing to do in the winter. For some of the best head to Northern Outdoors in The Forks. You can read more about this adventure here. Northern Outdoors, 1771 US-201, The Forks, ME 04985, USA
- Feel extra adventurous with a dogsled ride
Maine Dogsledding Adventures / Facebook To take things to a whole new winter level, make time for one of the most unique activities in the state! Make your way to Maine Dogsledding Adventures in the Newry Area for a fun-filled day out in nature. You can learn more about it here. - Immerse yourself in a holiday light show
pavdw / Flickr You’ll find plenty of light displays in Maine, from the ones put together in rural neighborhoods to the larger ones requiring a ticket. One of our favorites is Gardens Aglow at the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden. They offer a show with 500,000 LED lights and it’s a sight to behold! Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Botanical Gardens Drive, Boothbay, ME, USA
- Winter snow tubing
Seacoast Adventure / Facebook In a place like Maine, there are plenty of places to soak up those wintertime vibes. None is quite as much fun as a snow tubing park like the one Seacoast Adventures in Windham. You can learn all about it here. Seacoast Adventure, 930 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, ME 04062, USA
