It was 1914 when the Mohawk Trail was opened, and along this scenic byway, a restaurant opened the same year. Feeding weary travelers ever since, The Golden Eagle Restaurant is one of the oldest establishments along the road. While the scenic drive along the Mohawk Trail is arguably one of the best in the state, The Golden Eagle Restaurant serves up delicious eats with some of the most incredible views.
The Mohawk Trail follows a former Native American trade route between New York’s Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys and Massachusetts’ Deerfield and Connecticut River Valleys. It cuts through the Mohawk Trail State Forest which has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state, especially during the fall.

Along one part of the Mohawk Trail in Clarksburg is a treacherous hairpin turn, and at this turn is a restaurant known as the Golden Eagle Restaurant. It was first opened in 1914 but rebuilt in 1958 after two different trucks crashed into it just months apart. It was rebuilt a bit further into the mountain to avoid another incident.
