Welcome to the Museum of Colorado Prisons (or Colorado Prison Museum), a former women’s prison turned museum that is arguably one of the most unique in the country.

Hiding away near the very much active Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility (don’t get the two confused!), the Museum of Colorado Prisons was built in 1935 and, during that time, housed some of the country’s most notorious female inmates.

Like many small jails, the former Canon City Women’s Correctional Facility would falter, leaving it empty until a group of locals came together to petition for the museum in the 1980s.

Today, the Colorado Prison Museum is home to some downright unique and creepy exhibits and artifacts, including a once-working gas chamber, replicas of cells, inmate art, and much more.
