What makes the Mobile Bay Middle Lighthouse extra unique is the fact that it has a hexagon shape. It’s also one of the last screw-pile lighthouses left in the U.S.

Designed after lighthouses on Chesapeake Bay, this lighthouse’s lights weren’t automatic until 1935. This meant that lighthouse keepers resided inside the structure to help maintain it until then. Sadly, because the lighthouse no longer received regular maintenance, it eventually fell into disrepair.

In 1967, Alabama’s Mobile Bay Middle Lighthouse was deactivated. It eventually underwent nearly $350,000 in renovations and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
