Minnesota is home to some truly spectacular waterfalls. The most popular, such as Gooseberry or the High Falls of the Pigeon and Baptism Rivers, are along the North Shore. Further south, Minnehaha and Minneopa Falls are busy spots, as is Hidden Falls at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. And in Minnesota’s southwestern corner, Winnewissa Falls draws crowds. Each of these waterfalls is so popular, in part, because they’re so easy to get to. Walking down a short trail — usually in a state park — is all that it takes to visit most of these spots.
But what about Minnesota’s lesser-known waterfalls, the ones that are a little harder to get to? Today, we want to introduce one hidden waterfall that is so out of the way, most people have never seen it in person. Read on below to learn more about Kawishiwi Falls.
Kawishiwi Falls is a beautiful but lesser-known waterfall in Ely, Minnesota. Visitors can access the waterfall through a nearby parking area about 6 miles east of Ely on Fernberg Road. The trail itself is easy to navigate, with signage showing the route.

While the trail is relatively short - just under 1 mile - it is unpaved, which could prove challenging for some visitors. For part of the way, a narrow boardwalk through the woods marks the path through the trees.

Along the way, some rocky areas mean that you may have to step lightly. But you’ll be able to move at a leisurely pace. There likely won’t be many other visitors, so you can take your time along the trail.

Along the way, you won’t only spot interesting rocky areas. There are also some fascinating trees along the trail. You may spot wildflowers in the summer, and wildlife sightings are possible throughout the year.

Soon enough, you’ll hear the rumblings of Kawishiwi Falls. Then, it will come into view. The waterfall is spectacular, dropping 70 feet over a rugged cliff. It falls from Garden Lake to Fall Lake.

Trails between the two lakes let visitors explore the area more. It is possible to get up close to the waterfall. Visitors are even able to climb up and view the drop from above.
