Blennerhassett, West Virginia is named after Harman Blennerhassett and Margaret Agnew Blennerhassett who built their mansion home there in 1798.
Wikimedia Commons From there, things took a turn for the worst for the Blennerhassetts. Their baby girl died and was buried on the island. Soon after, Harman Blennerhassett was accused of treason and a conspiracy to build a new county in Texas. Their home was then ransacked. The Blennerhassetts both spent time in the Virginia State Penitentiary and never returned to the island. The mansion was left to abandon and eventually burned to the ground.
Some say that Margaret Blennerhassett did return to the island… after her death, that is.
Wikimedia Commons People have seen the apparition of a lady dressed in all white and she is said to smell of roses. Some think that she is looking to the remains of her lost child whose grave was moved. Another reason is that she is waiting for Harman to return. The island is considered one of the most haunted places in West Virginia.
Today you can visit the island and see a reconstruction of the mansion. It’s an interesting tour just for the history, but you just might get to see a little bit more!
