Camping is one of America’s greatest pastimes. There’s nothing quite like laying out all your gear, packing up a huge backpack, slinging it over your shoulder, and heading out into the wilderness for a few days of peace and relaxation. In New Mexico, there is a lake hidden deep in the Pecos Wilderness Northeast of Santa Fe. This lake is known as Hidden Lake, and is the perfect spot for camping no matter the time of year.

Before you pitch your tent and break out the grill for some delicious burgers and s’mores, you have to get to Hidden Lake, and it’s no walk through the park!

Hidden Lake has truly earned its name. To get there, you must hike just over six miles on Trampas Lake Trail and then Hidden Lake Trail, where you will gain over 2,000 feet of elevation.

Hidden Lake is located at an elevation over 11,000 feet, giving you an incredible opportunity to camp at this high-altitude campsite.

If you are looking to break up the trip into more days, we recommend stopping for the night at Trampas Lakes, at the end of Trampas Lake Trail. This will give you an extra night camping out under the stars if you are looking for a longer trip.

This one is a true adventure. There are creeks that you must cross along the way, testing your balance and making you earn the incredible views to come.

In the warmer months, the lake can be relatively busy during the daytime. If you want to meet fellow backpackers, this is the time to go! However, if you are seeking some solitude, its better to plan for a winter backpacking trip!

Your trail will take you in and out of forests of aspen trees and through meadows. Be sure to enjoy the journey and not just focus on the destination!

Trips like this are the ones that create memories that last a lifetime. Next time you need an escape, lace up those hiking boots and set out for a night at Hidden Lake. (And be sure to let us know what your favorite part was!)
