Ohio is home to some of the most beautiful caves in the world — both aboveground and below. And while destinations such as Old Man’s Cave and Seneca Caverns are absolutely worth seeing, there’s something alluring about exploring the off-the-beaten-path destinations. One prime example is known as Chapel Cave. Accessible via a 1.75-mile out-and-back trail through the woods, this little-known, hidden cave in Ohio is full of charm and wonder. And just wait until you see the view!

In order to access the cave, you’ll want to start at the parking lot for Hocking Hills State Forest Rock Climbing and Rappelling Area.
Victoria Williams / Google The trail, which is a bridle trail but also open to hikers, is blazed white and will follow a long stream. Hikers should note that this trail is notoriously muddy, so be sure to wear the appropriate shoes!
About a mile into the hike, you’ll notice a rock outcropping up on a hill. This is where the cave is located, and you’ll have to find the not-so-well-marked trail that leads you up there.
Teagan Vaughan / Google Head up the hill and take a right once you reach the base of the outcropping. From there, the blazes will become more noticeable, and you’ll soon notice Chapel Cave on your right.
Once you’ve reached the cave, be sure to take time to notice its unique colorings and formation. There’s something positively mesmerizing about these ancient rocks!
