Connecticut gets a bad rap as a boring state. If you’ve spent any time in the marvelous Constitution State, you know nothing could be further from the truth. There are so many beautiful places and natural wonders in Connecticut. It’s an outdoor lover’s dream and it’s just waiting to be explored. One park in Connecticut that we feel doesn’t get enough love is Steep Rock Preserve. This 1,000-acre haven is filled with trails to hike and has a magical tunnel that will have you feeling like you stepped into a storybook.

The Steep Rock Association is a land trust that operates four preserves in the Washington County area. The largest of these is Steep Rock Preservem which features 18 miles of winding woodland trails.

You can walk from the heavily-forested path directly to this tunnel. Constructed way back in 1871, the 271-foot tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel.

Steep Rock Association The railroad shut down in 1948. The tunnel now serves as a cool spot to catch your breath when out hiking on a warm day.

The trails here are so calming and magical. You’ll feel a million miles away from all your worries when you’re out enjoying the peace of Connecticut nature.

Steep Rock is also home to the remains of Holiday House. This hotel was built in 1892, and all that stands today is rubble.
