There are just some places that end up, no matter how beautiful they are, rumored to be intensely haunted. There can be all sorts of reasons for this; the place might be marred by tragedy or have a particularly dark history. It might be socially or culturally significant in some way, or perhaps it’s just a favorite subject among youngsters who make up spooky stories for fun to frighten their friends. No matter what the backstory may or may not be, some places are just plain creepy. There are a few Hoosier State towns that fit this description, but there’s one in particular that seems to be a definite hub of unusual paranormal activity. Could Bloomington be the most haunted town in Indiana?

On the surface, Bloomington doesn’t really seem all that scary at all.

There are numerous places all over Bloomington and the surrounding area thought to be haunted.

Eli Duke/Flickr Some aren’t just haunted; some are very haunted, and many of the spirits around here are said to be able to harm the living, though we’re not entirely certain about that.

Either way, Bloomington is creepy - especially when you know the stories behind many of its most infamously spooky spots.

darkthirty/Flickr For example, there’s an abandoned amusement park nestled in the woods nearby town; the last remaining piece of its existence is the old, decaying Zoom Flume slide. Some folks are foolish enough to wander that way at night, and they often return with tales of strange and downright eerie things that happened while they were there.

Numerous houses in town are rumored to be plagued by spirits, though the majority of them are private property curious ghost hunters are unable to explore.

Several cemeteries in and around town are said to be inhabited by the restless deceased, like the Stepp Hill and Rose Hill Cemeteries.

Eugene Kim/Flickr Stepp Cemetery in particular is known for its legendary lore; tales of a lady in black abound, and many locals claim to have seen her.

Other places in Bloomington said to have a ghost problem are things like quarries, theaters, libraries, and even whole streets.

Eli Duke/Flickr For those who do believe in life after death, there is plenty of confirmation to be had around here. For those who don’t believe, well, maybe an after-dark visit is in order. After all, what isn’t real can’t hurt you… right?

Perhaps the most haunted place in all of Bloomington - if not the whole state - is the campus of Indiana University.

Butal Lee/Flickr The ghost stories that have come out of there over the decades are numerous and spine-tingling; for example, there are several dormitory halls infamous for being haunted, and there’s at least one ultra-ancient cemetery on the grounds, which certainly doesn’t help things. Other wayward spirits include those of deceased students, jilted lovers, and even a dog (which might be the best kind of ghost there is, honestly).

No matter what you believe, there are parts of Bloomington that are older than the state itself, and places like that, while intriguing, just seem to be inherently spooky, too.
