Devils Tower is a tower that rises more than 1,200 feet above the Belle Fourche River below it. Also known as Bear Lodge Butte, Devils Tower was the first National Monument in the United States, having been established by President Teddy Roosevelt more than 100 years ago in 1906. Today, thousands venture to hike around and climb up Devils Tower, in a unique once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Devils Tower is thought to have been formed from magma by igneous intrusion.

Devils Tower is also very important to Native American culture. The Kiowa and Lakota tribes have many stories to explain Devils Tower, including that the Great Spirit created the tower to save some children from giant attacking bears.
