Here at Only In Your State, we love featuring small businesses that help out their communities in various ways. So when we heard about The BAKERY on Bergen, we knew we had to feature this place! Based in Brooklyn, this Black-owned business is incredibly active in the local community. Owner Akim Vann is a mathematics tutor for local students and hosts baking classes for community members at the shop. She’s been featured on Bravo TV and Humans of New York. As if all that wasn’t enough, they also serve up delicious homemade goodies in all kinds of fantastic flavors!
Interestingly, Akim Vann wasn’t even a baker when she started the business six years ago. Vann’s intention was to be involved on the back end of the business, and the (since departed) co-founder was going to do the baking.

She’s certainly stepped up to the challenge, learning how to bake with style. Her skills as a mathematician have helped her immensely in her baking endeavors.

Vann tutors local students in math and also holds practical mathematics classes for kids at the bakery. Seeing real world applications of math makes children more likely to pay attention (and the tasty treats don’t hurt!)
