One of the best parts about Virginia’s hiking trails is that they often lead someplace unforgettable. Whether that’s a view of the ocean, a stunning mountain overlook, or perhaps even an abandoned ghost town, these trails promise adventure. That’s especially true of today’s feature hiking destination, Dobie Mountain Trail. Located off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this scenic trek will lead you to abandoned plane wreckage from 1964. This unique hike in Virginia is haunting and certainly unforgettable.
Dobie Mountain Trail can be accessed via the Humpback Rocks Parking Lot off of the Blue Ridge Parkway (Mile Post 6).

This trail is considerably less popular than Humpback Rocks, but that only adds to the appeal. From the parking lot, follow the blue-blazed trail that will lead to the Appalachian Trail in 0.3 miles.

At the A.T. intersection, you can take a sharp left to follow the white-blazed trail that will lead to a stunning overlook of Rockfish Gap after 0.8 miles.

The next segment of the trail will coincide with the Albright Loop Trail, which you’ll follow for a series of switchbacks. After nearly a mile, you’ll be able to see remnants of a plane crash from 1964.

Very little is known about the crash due to the fact that there was no flight plan filed. It’s important that you respect the site and leave all wreckage as it is.
