Spending time outdoors has a tremendous effect on you, both mentally and physically. Studies have shown that being outdoors can lower levels of cortisol, a hormone that’s a marker for stress, and we could all use a little less stress in our lives. When the urge to spend a little time under the sun strikes, there’s one nature preserve in Louisiana that’s perfect for a day of outdoor adventure.
Barataria Preserve is a nature preserve located in Marrero, Louisiana.
Tori Boudreaux/Google It’s part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, which oversees six different sites in the state.
Open seven days a week from dawn until dusk, the preserve is free to enter and a great activity for families with kids of all ages.
Carla Sessions/Google The nature trails are all relatively short (less than two miles) so you can mix and match to fit your schedule.
During your visit, you’ll traverse the boardwalk and gravel trails that wind through the preserve’s 26,000 acres of bayous, swamps, marshes, and forests.
