The town is perched on the edge of steep mountain slopes that descend to the banks of the Guyandotte River, giving visitors to Logan plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation amid panorama after panorama of beautiful West Virginia scenery.

This variety of river and mountain terrain makes the Logan area an ideal location for one of West Virginia’s reintroduced elk herds, and fall is an excellent time to see these elk out grazing at the Logan Wildlife Management Area in preparation for winter. If you are lucky, you may even be treated to the sound of a bull elk bugling!

In addition to its natural beauty and the unique wildife opportunities it features, Logan is also an area filled with history. The town of Logan is named for Chief Logan, a famous Mingo Indian chief. Aracoma, the daughter of Shawnee Chief Cornstalk, was killed and buried nearby.

Logan’s Chafin House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the home of infamous sherriff Don “Czar” Chafin from 1920-1933. Chafin extorted money from the local mine owners to keep the miners from unionizing and then led the defending forces at the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain.

As for the season, here’s a snapshot of why fall is such a great time to visit this area. Yes, these mountains are beautiful any time of year. But that beauty is amplified ten-fold in the fall.
