fishfoot/flickr According to legend, Colonel Samuel Taylor Suite built the castle between 1885 and 1891. When he was 46, he fell in love with Rosa Pelham, the 17-year-old daughter of a Alabama congressman. She initially turned down his marriage proposal but he persisted, promising to build a her a castle if she married him. He unfortunately died before it was done, but Rosa finished it.

Eileen Mundok/Flickr How could a castle not integrate into local gossip? Rosa hosted lavish parties at her beloved castle home over the years. Perhaps too lavish, though. Her money was gone by the time she was 50 and the castle was sold at auction. She moved to a small house and raised chickens, and the castle at that time was leased out for various purposes… even serving as a tea room!
Circa 1950, the castle was purchased by a local with a love of history. He later opened it to the public for tours.
Berkeley Springs Castle Over the years, the castle has been used a boys camp and a museum that was open to the public.
In recent years, however, it has undergone renovations and even went on the market in 2018.
Berkeley Springs Castle The castle is currently off the market, but you can still admire it from afar!
While the castle is currently closed to the public, it’s a landmark that locals can’t seem to take their eyes off of.
