A staple in the Bay Area, Matterhorn opened in 1987 when original owner Gustav Erpen set out to create an authentic Swiss dining experience in the city. Erpen handed over ownership a few years later to Brigitte and Andrew Thorpe. They became longtime owners of the iconic eatery, handing over the keys to new owners, Natalie and Jason Horwath, in 2019. Owners have changed and time has passed, but the Matterhorn is as charming as ever.

Everything about Matterhorn exudes authenticity and charm. The dining room “chalet” was built from imported Swiss materials and by a Swiss family. Furniture, art, and items like a real vintage gondola from Switzerland complete the atmosphere!

When it comes to the menu, everything they serve is inspired by the simplicity and quality of alpine cuisine. You don’t have to go skiing to enjoy iconic après-ski dishes like onion soup (“zibelesuppe”), an alpine board (“älplerteller”), or pork schnitzel. This is mountain comfort food at its absolute best.

Although, fondue is Matterhorn’s specialty. You can choose from a variety of cheese fondues including Moitié-Moitié, Emmental, or Savoyarde. You can also opt for the Raclette Dinner, in which you melt your own selection of alpine cheeses - a Swiss tradition!
