Missouri is well known for having the longest rail-to-trail park in the nation. The Katy Trail is just over 237 miles long and follows the Missouri River almost across the entire state. However, there are more converted rails-to-trails in the state that many people don’t know about. We think this 35 mile trail is one of the best hikes in Missouri, and it should be your next hiking or biking adventure. Check it out!
Take a ride or a run down the Frisco Highline Trail in Southwestern Missouri. The trail is 35 miles long and runs between Springfield and Boliver. The trail is maintained by Ozark Greenways, Inc., a non-profit that preserves the Ozarks’ natural heritage for public use and enjoyment by developing a greenway trail network.

Following the old Frisco rail lines, this trail is the second longest rail-to-trail in the state. The first section of the trail was opened from Willard to Walnut Grove in 1999.

The trail has five trailheads where you can park and unload bikes or strollers. There are also many stops along the route for food and drinks, history lessons, and stunning views.

One amazing spot along the trail is the La Petite Gemme Prairie. This stunning prairie is the only publicly-owned virgin prairie in Polk County. Enjoy the 37 acres of native grasses and wildflowers. The prairie is located at mile marker 32.

Your whole family can enjoy a day on the trail. Eight miles of the trail has been paved. The remaining 18 miles are compacted crushed gravel. It’s ADA-accessible and is good for walking, running, biking, and in-line skating on the paved sections.

Take the Frisco Highline Trail for amazing country views and loads of history. Make your way across 16 old railroad bridges throughout Polk County. The trail is open from dawn till dusk. Extend your trip, and check out the great camping sites and inns along the way.
