Over the years, many visitors of Gaineswood have reported the sounds of a piano playing. It’s believed the spirit of the children’s nanny is playing the piano. The nanny and children would always play musical instruments together. After dying one winter, the nanny’s body was buried and later sent to her home state in the spring. It appears her spirit was left behind. This legend even has its very own story in Kathryn Tucker Windham’s “13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey.” It’s titled “The Ghost at Gaineswood.”
