Gathland State Park is named after war correspondent George Alfred Townsend, who used the pen name “Gath” during the Civil War, and who lived on the property. The War Correspondents Memorial Arch sits directly next to the Appalachian Trail. This arch is the first monument dedicated to journalists who were killed in combat, and today is a National Historic Monument under the National Park Service.
