Towering 5,946 feet above North Carolina is Grandfather Mountain, a natural structure estimated to be 300 million years old with certain rock formations dating as far back as 1.2 billion years. Like the wise family member it’s named after, Grandfather Mountain provides a wealth of information and natural calm to those who hike its trails. By hiking along the mountain, you’re connecting with a rich ecological ancestry.
Some sections of the mountain can be driven through, others can only be explored on foot.

One of the highlights of a trip to Grandfather Mountain is the Mile High Swinging Bridge, a 228-foot suspension bridge that spans an 80-foot chasm. From the bridge, viewers get 360-degree views of the natural setting around them.

The bridge can be reached by car or foot and is accessible to those with mobility challenges. It has been a fixture of the park since 1952, but don’t worry, today’s iteration swings very little as opposed to the original.

The Mile High Bridge is one of the windiest places in North Carolina. When the wind blows, it makes a singing sound like a harmonica against the bridge.
