Say “Arizona” and people conjure up images of desert, heat, and sand. And sure, all of those things are true. But Arizona also has some truly magnificent hidden slices of paradise in the site. One of our favorites is found on a cool hiking trail.

The start of Butcher Jones Trail, located in Tonto National Forest near Apache Junction, Arizona, might not sound like anything special.

Brent Worden/AllTrails However, this is actually one of the best hiking trails in the entire state.

Why is this such a perfect trail? Well, because you rise out of the desert and hike around this gorgeous lake.

Raquel Montoya Delao/AllTrails Look at those lake and mountain views!

The water is so blue, especially in contrast to the brown of the desert. It’s a sight that will make your jaw drop.

julie richard/AllTrails Who said Arizona was entirely dry and dusty?

Of course, the natural beauty of this hike isn’t the only part of the trail that takes your breath away.

Raquel Montoya Delao/AllTrails The trail is rated “moderate” on AllTrails and features 636 feet of elevation gain. Not too steep – but this out and back trail is almost six miles long.

Plus, you may be by a lake, but you’re still in the desert. It’s hot out there! You will sweat.

Orlando Saez/AllTrails Always, always bring plenty of water when you set out for a hike.

Another important reminder: The trail is located in the Tonto National Forest, which means you need to pay for a day pass to get in.

K Puck/AllTrails Luckily, it’s affordable: only $8. You can pay the entrance fee on site.

And trust us, the hike is worth it. After all, you get great exercise and see a great sight!

Cathy Lewis/AllTrails That’s the perfect trail, in our opinion.

Oh, and your dog can join the hike, too! Just make sure to keep your pets on a leash.
