Mount Rainier National Park is known for its hiking opportunities, and the Tolmie Peak Trail is one of the best. There’s a reason why one of the four existing fire lookout stations in the park is located at Tolmie Peak. The panoramic views are spectacular from this vantage point, as Mount Rainier rises above two lakes. This is one of those hikes that offers a stunning prize at the end. Even hikers who start the climb expecting to be rewarded are surprised by the awe-inspiring scenery that surrounds them. The Tolmie Peak Trail covers 6.5 miles round trip with about a 1,100-foot elevation gain, according to the National Park Service website.

The Tolmie Peak Trail is rated as a moderate hike, although there are a couple of difficult sections. Getting to the trailhead is also somewhat of a challenge; a high-clearance vehicle is suggested. The hike begins in the northwest corner of Mount Rainier National Park, about 17 miles from the town of Carbonado.
