Rhode Island sure has a lot of hiking for such a small state! It may be hard to believe, but there are well over 100 trails in the smallest state and they all offer something special for the adventurous hiker. There are paths for all levels of experience and every age, and you can find almost any type of terrain if you look hard enough. It would be overwhelming if we didn’t know that it’s near impossible to make a wrong choice! One great hike we are loving right now is through the Fisherville Brooks Wildlife Refuge in Exeter.

The Fisherville Brooks Wildlife Refuge is over 1,000 acres of gorgeous, nearly untouched nature located in Exeter Rhode Island.

There are a few different foot bridges to help you cross water and other tough terrain.

One of the bridges even goes over a charming little waterfall. Make sure to keep an eye out for wildlife like otters, beavers, and wood frogs as you are looking out at the water!

There are many birds to be spotted along this trail as well, and if you’re lucky you may see a fox, deer, or muskrat.

Probably the strangest feature of this hike is the historical cemetery you will find as you walk. Just another reason to do the full hourglass loop to make sure you see everything Fisherville Brooks Wildlife Refuge has to offer.
