Ohio is brimming with unique accommodations: treehouse Airbnbs, cozy bed and breakfasts, picturesque resorts, and just about everything in between. Today’s feature destination is equally as unique, but for another reason altogether. The Historic Lafayette Hotel is rumored to be quite haunted. Staying a few nights at this charming landmark, you’ll be exposed to history, beautiful architecture, and possibly even something spooky.

Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, the Lafayette is a grand hotel that harkens back to the Riverboat era.

The hotel opened in 1918 in replacement of the original Bellevue Hotel that was built in 1892 and tragically destroyed by fire.

What draws visitors to the hotel today is its grandness as well as its history. The town of Marietta is steeped in river history, which you can discover when you tour the Ohio River Museum.

Inside the hotel itself, you’ll find historic artifacts that illustrate the century-long history. Old photos line the hallways, offering a glimpse of the hotel through the decades.

And as is the case with many historic buildings, the hotel is among the most haunted places in Ohio. According to legend, the third floor is teeming with paranormal activity.

Some have reported seeing a Victorian woman wandering the hallway, completely dressed in clothes suitable to that time period. Others report items going missing only to reappear the next morning. And while none of the accounts are explicitly sinister, they are chilling.
