Condé Nast, the umbrella brand that includes publications such as GQ, The New Yorker, and Vogue, published a list of the most beautiful places in each state. Anyone who has spent any time in the Empire State knows it’s a tall order to choose just one beautiful place in New York. Our mountains, caves, farmlands, and even our urban sprawling landscapes all have their own special attributes that make them lovely. With 180 state parks and 22 national parks, it goes without saying that we’ve got some gorgeous places throughout the state. The one that topped Condé Nast’s list was the stunning Letchworth State Park in western New York.
Letchworth spans more than 14,000 acres. The park is astoundingly gorgeous and it’s no wonder that it has received multiple awards for “best state park in the country.”

The park’s massive gorge is nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of the East.” The walls rise up to 550 feet in some areas.

Letchworth is home to three impressive waterfalls made by the Gennesee River as it winds through the landscape. There’s also a number of other, smaller, waterfalls throughout the park.

The park’s three largest falls (Upper, Middle, and Lower) are visible in the Portage Canyon. There’s a stone bridge just below the Lower Falls that provides a great vantage point.

The exposed canyon is mostly made up of shale, limestone, and sandstone. It’s amazing to think this area was once sea. The canyons are filled with marine fossils.

Regardless of what time of year it is, Letchworth State Park is most assuredly one of the most beautiful places in New York.
