Have you ever wanted to get away from everything? There’s a wonderful place to do that in Nebraska, and it’s so remote that you may find yourself wanting to stay even longer to enjoy the quiet and relaxation at Merritt Trading Post Resort.
Merritt Trading Post Resort probably doesn’t fit most people’s definition of “resort.” There are no spa treatments or world-class restaurants here - just you, nature, and your fellow visitors.

When we say this place is remote, we really mean it. It’s located on Merritt Reservoir, which is on the southeastern tip of McKelvie National Forest.

The closest major city is Valentine, which is a 30-minute drive away. The nights here are darker than just about anywhere else in the state, allowing for some absolutely stunning stargazing.

You’ll enjoy the basic comforts of home, including a private bathroom with a shower, fridge with freezer, heat and air conditioning, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, and more. True to its name, Merritt Trading Post has a store where you can get some necessities for your trip. Groceries, bait, gasoline, personal care items, camping supplies, and even hunting and fishing licenses are available for purchase.

And you’ll certainly want to make sure you’ve got those licenses because Merritt Reservoir is one of Nebraska’s top fishing spots. The lake is stocked with walleye, muskie, bluegill, largemouth bass, catfish, perch, and more.
Merritt Trading Post Resort One thing is for sure: it’s almost impossible to leave the lake without catching something, and that “something” is likely to be huge.
There’s even ice fishing in the winter, which is when you’ll be most likely to catch some crappie, perch, and bluegill. If you’re a novice angler (or if you just want a little guidance), the resort offers guided tours that will show you where and how to snag your next record-setting catch.

But you don’t have to limit yourself to fishing and hunting when you visit Merritt Trading Post Resort. The lake is gorgeous and lends itself well to boaters, swimmers, and anyone who enjoys a beautiful sandy beach.
Merritt Trading Post/Google Local Open fires are not permitted, but you may use one of the fire rings located on the resort’s grounds.
The area is unbelievably scenic all year round, and you’re sure to find yourself falling in love with this unique spot in the Sandhills.
