The year was 1853. The Christian Moerlein Brewing Company was established in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood by a Bavarian immigrant who was passionate about brewing hearty, European-style beers.

Moerlein passed away in 1897, and the Prohibition period stopped beer production altogether. In 1981, Moerlein beer was re-introduced to Cincinnati, and became one of the few to adhere to the strict Reinheitsgebot Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.

Upheld to this day, this law insists that there are just four ingredients in the beer: hops, malted barley, yeast, and water. If you’re a fan of beer, you’ll likely be able to tell the difference!
