In the mid-nineteenth century, Moonville was a thriving, albeit small, railroad community. The Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad built a railroad line across the yard of a man by the name of Samuel Coe. The town of Moonville was established quickly after, feasibly for one of the town’s residents, Mr. Moon. By the late 1800s, the town boasted nearly 100 residents; however, due to diminishing coal deposits in the area, Moonville was quickly abandoned. The final family moved away in 1947, and Moonville quickly became a ghost town. Today, all that remains are a few building foundations, the train tunnel, and a haunting ghost town cemetery in Ohio.
The Moonville Tunnel is perhaps one of the most fascinating and haunting landmarks in southeastern Ohio.
