Zion National Park is undoubtedly one of the crown jewels of Utah’s impressive park system. It’s also often found at the top of the list of the best national park to visit in Utah. Fortunately, the park is so grand that it’s possible to discover places where you can enjoy both scenery and, if you visit during an off-peak hour, perhaps even some solitude. Today, we’ll introduce you to one such overlook within the park known as the Canyon Overlook Trail.
For unbeatable views of Zion Canyon, head to the Canyon Overlook Trail within the park. If you’ve visited Zion National Park before, you’re likely aware of its efficient shuttle system.

What makes Zion Canyon Overlook a bit more off-the-beaten-path is the fact that it’s not accessible by shuttle. Rather, hikers will need to drive to the trailhead.
Dante Myers / AllTrails
To get there, simply follow Highway 9 northeast from the Visitor Center.
Kenneth Lund / AllTrails After a few switchbacks, you’ll drive through the Mount Carmel Tunnel and will see the parking lot just after exiting the tunnel. Keep in mind it’s a small lot, so it’s best to attempt the trail early in the morning or late afternoon.
Once you start the trail, you’ll immediately begin gaining elevation. This short-and-sweet hike is considered relatively easy, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel the burn as you make the ascent towards a phenomenal view!
Robert Greer / AllTrails
Another fascinating aspect of this trail is the fact that it’s carved out of sandstone. For a majority of the way, you’ll be hiking alongside a giant stone wall.

Once you reach the lookout, prepare to be dazzled by the panoramic views of Zion Canyon before you.
Javier Rodriguez / AllTrails
Hiking this relatively easy trail is a wonderful adventure any time of the year!

When considering the best national park to visit in Utah, make Zion a priority. And while you are there, add the Canyon Overlook Trail to your schedule!

national park to visit in Utah March 25, 2022 Courtnie Erickson What are some of the best parks in Utah? While Zion National Park is certainly one of the best and most popular national parks to visit in Utah, there are many others that also deserve your attention. Near Zion, you will find the beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park. This park is home to red cliffs, hoodoos, and more. Bryce Canyon is a gorgeous place to catch a sunrise or a sunset and if you are looking for a unique hiking trail in Utah, the Peek-A-Book Loop Trail is a sure winner. This hiking trail takes you down to the bottom of the canyon where you can receive a whole new perspective on this stunning park. Of course, Arches National Park has to be on the list as one of the best parks in Utah. This national park is home to more than 2,000 natural arches and it is breathtaking. You can drive through the park to view many of the main features but there are also many hikes that range in difficulty level and length that take you to some true hidden gems. For a short hike that the entire family can enjoy, check out the Sand Dune Arch Trail. It is just 0.3 miles to the arch but be prepared for sand and little shade along your journey. Arches National Park is also one remarkable place in Utah where a lot has changed over the years. Some arches have changed in size, roads have been created, and more. We created a fun before-and-after article with historic photos of this park. Take a look and see just how much has changed over the years!
