Anyone who’s spent time in Minnesota knows that our state qualifies for a host of superlative titles. For example, we have (arguably) the most beautiful state parks in the nation. The Twin Cities have more live theater than just about any other major city in the United States. And, of course, our more than 11,000 lakes qualify us as one of the most lake-filled states. All of this to say that Minnesota really is among the best of the best – and so are many of our state’s landmarks. This includes Split Rock Lighthouse, which we believe could be one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States. Read on below to see why:
Split Rock Lighthouse is a beautiful lighthouse found at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park on Minnesota’s North Shore. It’s near the small town of Two Harbors, about 30 miles north of Duluth on Highway 61.

Thanks to its beauty, Split Rock is one of the most visited parks in Minnesota. As such, it is likely the most photographed lighthouse in Minnesota. That makes it one of the most photographed in the nation!

Whether inside or outside, the lighthouse poses for a lot of photos. Inside, people enjoy shots of its spiral stairs and other vital parts. It’s possible for visitors to enter the lighthouse and climb to the top!

Of course, the outside of the lighthouse is even more photographed. On its 133-foot-tall clifftop perch over Lake Superior, it’s an impressive sight for North Shore visitors. There are many opportunities to see the light, including roadside stops that offer a perfect vantage point from afar.

There are plenty of other ways to see the lighthouse as well. Of course, you can see it up close when you visit the state park, which also has many vantage points on its hiking trails. Or you can take to the water.

No matter the season, this historic lighthouse -built in 1910 - puts on a beautiful show. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular year-round, with every season bringing its own unique beauty to the landmark.

Next time you’re visiting the North Shore and you stop to snap a photo of this iconic Minnesota lighthouse, know that you’re in good company. As one of the most beautiful lighthouses in America, it is surely one of the most photographed as well. It’s yet another reason Minnesota is such a wonderful place to live!
