Moreover, it carries a fascinating history. Here’s more on why Polegreen Church belongs on your day trip bucket list.
Tucked away on the side of the road in Mechanicsville, Virginia, awaits a truly fascinating landmark: the Historic Polegreen Church. At first glance, this structure looks like little more than a skeleton of a building.

As you approach the structure, however, you’ll appreciate its beautiful symmetry and minimalism.

The landmark isn’t actually a building at all; it’s a tribute to the former Polegreen Church that was built in 1964.

The former church was established as one of the first non-Anglican churches in the U.S. by a man named Samuel Davies. He was a major proponent of teaching enslaved people how to read.
Henry Hertzler / Google Davies is also known as the first American hymn writer. One of his most famous hymns is entitled, “Lord, I Want to be a Christian in My Heart."
Sadly, Polegreen Church was burned to the ground during the Civil War. Today, what remains is akin to a skeleton. However, it’s impossible not to feel at peace when you visit this significant landmark in the woods.

Polegreen Church is also used as a venue for quiet and intimate gatherings, such as small weddings. No matter your reason for visiting, you’ll be grateful to have learned more about the history of this humble yet significant landmark.
