Tucked away within beautiful Ohio County, Indiana, lies a tiny little town that truly does not get the love it deserves. In fact, many folks native to the Hoosier State don’t even realize this little place exists, and that’s an absolute tragedy. It’s always fun to find a small town you’ve never heard of and explore, and today we’re going to take a look at what might be the single most underrated small town in Indiana.
Rising Sun, Indiana, was established in 1816.

In its infancy, Rising Sun quickly became a popular seasonal stop for flatboats journeying down the Ohio River, and to this day, it holds onto that tradition.

It’s tiny - less than two square miles - and has a population of less than 1,500 people.
J. Stephen Conn/Flickr It’s truly that town where everyone knows everyone, and there’s a strong sense of community here. There’s no shortage of fun, interesting, or exciting things going on around here, either!
Walking (or boating) the riverfront is wonderful, but there’s a lot more to Rising Sun than just those two activities.
J. Stephen Conn/Flickr Peruse the unique mom-and-pop shops downtown, or check out the amazing Red Wolf Sanctuary, where you can meet some beautiful wolves and learn about them, too. It rehabilitates hundreds of wolves a year and does amazing conservation work; it’s definitely worth a visit, especially for animal lovers.
There’s also an ongoing “thing” in Rising Sun where folks hide, look for, rehide, and post about hand-painted rocks on the local Rock On Risin Sun Facebook page.

For a town so small, it sure does have huge heart.

Ohio County might be the smallest county in Indiana, but one thing is certain: it has big heart, and wonderful little towns like Rising Sun are what makes it truly special.
