Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a stunningly beautiful, 1,000-acre piece of land in Birmingham, Alabama, and if you are looking to get outside for an adventure with your dogs, (or just go somewhere where you can observe other dogs), this is the place to be. Once home to a major mining operation, this area wasn’t always this green. But, when the mines were shut in the 1950s, trees, plants, and wildlife quickly moved back into the area, making it the lovely place it is today.

The preserve is open Tuesday through Sunday. It opens at 7 a.m. every day but closes at either 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. depending on the season, so make sure you check before you head out there.
