One of our favorite botanical attractions in the Empire State is Rochester’s Lamberton Conservatory. This magical spot is indoors, making it a welcome respite from the often-bitter winters in New York. It’s home to many plant species that wouldn’t be able to survive in the harshly cold temperatures outside. This is one of the most unique gardens in New York and it makes for a great visit any time of year.
The Lamberton Conservatory was first built in 1911 on the grounds of Highland Park. By the turn of the century, the structure was so dilapidated by time that it was becoming very costly to maintain.

In 2007, the building was rebuilt as an exact replica of the original, using modern materials. It’s now returned to its former glory, with 1,000 glass panes and more than 1,800 square feet of floor space.

The exhibits change seasonally, so you never know what you’ll run into here. The focus tends to be on plants that couldn’t survive outside in New York weather.

You’ll see interesting desert plants here, as well as things like banana trees and carnivorous plants.

A few turtles live here, and even a tortoise named Chuck Norris. There are also a few button quail and ducks that call this place home.
