There’s a beautiful allure between nature and pedestrian bridges. Give me a trail with a rich, green canopy overhead and an occasional long-range vista plus a few bridges and I’m all in for the adventure. But what about swinging bridges? The kind that sway in the breeze as you move across them. The kind that are held in place, mostly, by ropes or heavy-gauge wires? Are you up for crossing a swinging bridge on a trail?
Let’s take a look at three of them that are found right here in the Palmetto State:
- Twelve Mile Creek swinging bridgeIf your answer is a resounding yes, then head out to Walnut Creek Park in Lancaster, South Carolina, where you’ll find a 180-foot swinging bridge that sways high above Twelve Mile Creek.
AllTrails/Chris Gibbs
It’s found along the 3.5-mile Twelve Mile Creek Trail that departs from the park and ends up… in North Carolina.
AllTrails/Mike Broskin
In fact, this bridge is so unique, you’ll cross the border while on the bridge! Be sure to stop along the way to have your photo taken with the South Carolina state line marker!

- Anne Spring Close Greenway swinging bridgeYou may find a slight hint of acquiescence as you navigate this fun swinging destination.
Google/Kristi Hoffmaster It’s found along the 36 miles of trails inside the Greenway and crosses over Steele Creek. If your stomach gets weak, you might want to negotiate with the others in your party that only one person at time can be on the bridge. This could keep it a little more steady as you cross! To help you find the bridge, head toward the Dairy Barn.
Anne Springs Close Greenway The bridge connects the Dairy Barn with Lake Haigler and is fun for kids and adults alike.
Of course, there’s so much to see and do at Anne Springs Close Greenway it would be impossible to fit it all into even a full weekend.
