Exploring our state’s natural hot springs is one of our favorite Idaho adventures. There are a lot of wonderful hot springs in our state to choose from, but many require a hike or climb to reach. Finding an easily accessible hot spring that is also completely surrounded by natural beauty can be a challenge, but no longer! There’s a gorgeous natural hot spring in Idaho that you’ll definitely want to check out. Located right along the highway, this soaking spot is easy to find and the water is perfect for relaxing. Add this adventure to your hot spring bucket list and check it out the next time you need some soaking time.
Running right beside Highway 75 in central Idaho, the Salmon River boasts a ton of geothermal hot springs. However, one of the most popular and easiest to get to is Sunbeam Hot Springs and you’ll definitely want to pay it a visit.

Located within the Salmon-Challis National Forest, you’ll find this roadside hot spring hidden along a stretch of highway east of Stanley. Tucked right along the banks of the river, spotting the hot springs from the road can be tricky. Fortunately, you should easily notice the steam rising from the river!

Boulders and rocks have been used to form soaking pools right at the edge of the river. They are fed by a flow of hot water that cascades out of a nearby hillside, often at temperatures as high as 160 degrees. The river’s cold water mixes with the spring water to create the perfect soaking temperature.

The setting for this particular natural hot spring in Idaho couldn’t be any more spectacular. From the rushing Salmon River that runs alongside the pools to the vast forest that completely surrounds you, you’ll be in heaven as you soak away all your worries in this little slice of Idaho heaven!

However, what really makes Sunbeam Hot Springs so special is its history. A historic bathhouse can be found standing near the pools. Completed in 1937 by a CCC crew, it once contained actual baths for soaking. The baths were pulled out long ago, but the structure itself still stands as a historic tribute.

A paved path does lead down to the pools, but all visitors should use caution when traversing the area. The rocks surrounding the pools are slippery. Additionally, always test the water’s temperature before getting in as some of them are simply too hot for soaking.
