Let’s face it: the entire state of West Virginia is a paranormal investigator’s paradise. The Mountain State’s history is filled with tragic deaths, restless spirits, and mysterious sightings. We even once convicted a murderer based on the testimony of a ghost! However, if you’re looking for a good, easily accessible site for paranormal investigation among the plethora of options in West Virginia, the haunted old Sweet Springs Resort on the far eastern edge of the state is a somewhat abandoned ghost resort that’s an excellent choice.

Once upon a time in the late 1700s, a beautiful old resort began to be built alongside one of the prettiest springs in what was then the state of Virginia.

When the western portion of Virginia formed the new state of West Virginia during the Civil War, this massive old resort, which had grown to its present size, just barely made the cut.

The Old Sweet Springs Resort still sits just inside the West Virginia border, long abandoned and crumbling to ruin.

Attempts to restore it are still in the works, but in the meantime, you can rent the entire Old Sweet Springs Resort for well under $1,000 per night for the purposes of paranormal investigation.

In addition to an elite and popular spa (pictured is the old pool house!), this old resort has also served as a Civil War soldiers’ barracks, a tuberculosis sanitarium, a nursing home, and a rehabilitation center. As you can imagine, with a more than two-hundred-year life span and such a wide variety of uses, the Old Sweet is a paranormal investigator’s paradise.

But bring your own gear, including food and flashlights, because only part of the resort has electricity and restaurant options are very limited. And don’t count on running water, cell service, or Wi-Fi! You’re on your own out here, just you and this massive old haunted resort.

Groups are limited to ten participants, and participants must be at least 18 years old and sign a waiver upon entry. Even though the resort owners can’t guarantee that you’ll experience anything unusual, they do provide links to other paranormal research that has been conducted here so you can have a good idea of what to expect when you go.

Check the Sweet Springs website to learn how to book your paranormal tour and to see the results of those paranormal investigators who have gone before you! And like we mentioned, there are plenty of super scary paranormal tours around the rest of the state as well.
