If you’re looking for the best Halloween hikes in New Jersey, you’re going to love these haunted trails. Enjoy nature, wildlife, beautiful scenery, and perhaps a few spirits! They’re surrounded by ghost stories and plenty of paranormal activity.

  1. BaToNa Trail - Tabernacle/Pemberton

Betsy Rosalen/AllTrails BaToNa is short for Back To Nature and you’ll certainly get to enjoy plenty of natural beauty along this 50-mile trail through the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Any trail through this area is at least a little spooky, being that it’s the birthplace of the notorious Jersey Devil, but this trail is often ranked among the most haunted in the United States. There are multiple places to enter and exit the trail, so you don’t need to hike the entire 50 miles. Paranormal points of interest include Ong’s Hat (said to be the portal to another dimension) and the Carranza Memorial, which marks the site of a tragic plane crash.

If the shady woods aren’t spooky enough on their own…

Tom Smith/Flickr People report spotting the Jersey Devil, hearing screams and cries in the night, and mysterious, glowing yellow eyes. Even if you don’t believe the legends, you won’t want to miss the wildlife, ghost towns, and abandoned ruins along this trail.

  1. Double Trouble State Park Trail - Bayville/Berkeley

Garson Xie/AllTrails This easy, 2.5-mile loop trail will take you through an Atlantic White Cedar Forest, past cranberry bogs, and to a well-preserved historic, abandoned village.

Not only is this trail located in the Jersey Devil’s stomping grounds…

Mary-Alice Z./AllTrails Some locals report that a UFO landed here. There were strange lights and downed trees with no logical explanation (and no storms or other weather events at the time).

  1. Ghost Lake Trail - Hope

Kevin Kinsella/AllTrails This 3.8-mile out and back trail in Jenny Jump State Park is dog-friendly, and you may want to bring your furry friend… I wouldn’t want to be alone! Legend has it that Jenny Jump State Forest was named for a little girl who lost her life there and her spirit is said to have stayed behind.

A young girl with light hair has been seen skipping around the trails…

Kevin Kinsella/AllTrails Before disappearing into the mist! There’s often mist on the lake, even when it doesn’t make sense. There are also hidden caves and primitive ruins. Even the drive to this trail is spooky as you’ll be taking Shades of Death Road.
