In a city as urban as New Orleans, you might not think there’s much opportunity to get out and hike. True, we may not have many options for long forested trails through the wilderness. But there are definitely chances to enjoy the city with a long walk! One of our favorite trails is the French Quarter River Walk in New Orleans. This is a great path that will let you admire some of the prettiest areas in the city and really give you a great feel for what New Orleans is all about.

The River Walk (also known as the Moon Walk) is about 1.3 miles long. The area was developed as a shopping locale for both tourists and locals.

Michael Gassiott/Alltrails It’s now home to more than 75 shops and restaurants!

You’ll spend most of the walk right beside the mighty Mississippi River. The proximity to the river will have you feeling a little cooler and less humid than the rest of the city.

Saeid Balaneshin/Alltrails The lower temperature here makes this a particularly fun walk in New Orleans’ famously muggy summers!

There are plenty of areas to stop and sit, as the River Walk has lots of benches. Watching the boats float down the river makes the time go by quickly. There’s often many street performers out and about as well.

This isn’t a particularly steep walk and it’s accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. It’s also a great walk for friendly dogs that like being around people.

A walk through here will remind you what a great city New Orleans is. This is such a unique place and getting out to remind yourself of that is always a good thing.
