Rhode Island is such a beautiful little state. With so many types of terrain to see and over 100 individual hiking trails waiting to be discovered, it’s pretty hard to get bored in the smallest state. Sometimes though, you may find yourself looking for an adventure that’s a little more out of the box, perhaps even something that may scare you just a little bit. If you have a passion for being creeped out, this is one of the best hikes in Rhode Island for that!
The Hunts Mills trail is the perfect mix of frightening and historical. At .7 miles, this loop trail is doable for hikers of all abilities.

The trail launches from the John Hunt house in Rumford, East Providence. This house museum also holds events for the historical society and acts as a repository for articles relevant to the area.

This land used to hold a pumping station that supplied water to a chemical company. As you hike you can still see many remnants of the pumping station, including this jaw dropping waterfall.

At first glance, this may seem like any average loop hike, but with touches like this waterfall and other ruins attached to the pump house, you will definitely get some eerie feelings as you walk.

This land also used to host a small amusement park, and it can be really interesting to try and guess which bits of ruins are related to the park and which are related to water treatment.

There was a dance hall on the land that suffered a major fire in 1925 and the park closed forever as a result.

While we have not heard of any direct accounts of hauntings, with a fire like this, and the past history of the land, we can’t help but wonder if there are spirits in the woods. It can certainly feel a bit like you’re being watched while exploring.

With this land having served such dichotomous purposes (labor and leisure,) so much energy has been trapped in the area that it can’t help but feel generally creepy. But don’t let that hold you back from discovering this awesome trail. We’re pretty sure nothing will follow you home!
