Breaux Bridge is home to more than just crawfish, y’all. Just on the outskirts of town lies Lake Martin, one of the most beautiful lakes in Louisiana. Part of the Cypress Island Nature Preserve, Lake Martin is one of the state’s largest nesting colonies for waterbirds including anhingas, egrets, and those beautiful great blue herons. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or just looking to get outdoors and enjoy some beautiful scenery, the Lake Martin Loop Trail is just the ticket.

The trail clocks in at about 5 miles and loops around the entire lake.

Part boardwalk, part gravel, the trail is easy enough for even the youngest hikers to enjoy.

Kalun Dugas/All Trails You can also bring your dog, just make sure they’re on a leash…the area is heavily populated by alligators, which we’ll get to in a minute.

Along the trail, you’ll catch glimpses of the mesmerizing lake.

Like we mentioned earlier, Lake Martin is home to a huge population of birds, and you’ll most likely see and hear them along the trail.

Home to more than just birds, Lake Martin is also home to a massive amount of alligators.

Amanda Richter/All Trails We don’t like to guarantee wildlife sightings, but if you’re wanting to see an alligator in person, Lake Martin is pretty much a sure thing!

But even if you don’t see any gators, you’ll be front row to some of the most stunning natural scenery in Louisiana.

After you’ve hiked the trail, you may want to experience the lake from an entirely new perspective. Champagne’s Cajun Swamp Tours operates out of the lake, and they’re a fantastic company to go on a swamp tour with. Have you ever hiked the Lake Martin loop? Let us know in the comments below!
