Even though Allegheny County is home to a lone named waterfall, Fall Run Falls in Glenshaw, that doesn’t mean we can’t go chasing waterfalls, especially if we’re willing to travel a bit farther from home. We’re within driving distance, in fact, of quite a few waterfalls – some that require a bit of a hike and a few that are even hiding in plain sight, like this popular waterfall near Pittsburgh.
Go chasing waterfalls at Ohiopyle State Park, about an hour and a half from downtown Pittsburgh and home to several named waterfalls, including its namesake.

Perhaps the area’s most easily-accessible waterfall, Ohiopyle Falls draws visitors from all over the Pittsburgh-area and beyond, and you can view it from a few angles.

Start your visit at the Laurel Highlands Falls Area Visitors Center, where you can learn more about the park, especially if it’s your first time. However, the visitor center also offers prime views of Ohiopyle Falls.

However, that’s just your first stop. Grab a map at the visitor center then make your way to one of the observation decks for more stellar views of Ohiopyle Falls.

Because it’s so easily accessible, Ohiopyle Falls is a favorite in Western Pennsylvania, and it’s well worth a visit during each season.

If you have time after your visit to Ohiopyle Falls, drive less than a mile to Cucumber Falls. Just look for the sign announcing you’ve arrived at the small parking lot.

While it’s hidden compared to Ohiopyle Falls, Cucumber Falls can be viewed from above. Or, you can take a staircase down to the base of the cascade.
