Attending this annual winter festival in Idaho is a tradition for many Idahoans. In fact, this winter carnival draws more than 60,000 people to the small town of McCall every single year. The McCall Winter Carnival dates back nearly 100 years. It was first held in 1924 and was inspired by the Payette Lake Winter Games. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that it became the official McCall Winter Carnival we all know and love.

This carnival lasts for 10 days and there is no shortage of activities. Each day, the schedule is packed with events for the entire family. Many of the activities are enjoyed year after year while some are new and unique.

One of the most popular activities is the snow sculpture competition. Artists travel from all over the country to participate in this unique event and you will certainly see some incredible frozen sculptures.

Winners of the local Snow Sculpture Contest are awarded the first day of the carnival so you can travel around town and admire each amazing masterpiece.

You also won’t want to miss the fireworks over Payette Lake on both the opening and closing nights of the carnival.

There are also various parades that will take place throughout the McCall Winter Carnival including a Children’s Torchlight Parade and a Mardi Gras Parade. These parades attract quite a crowd and are some of the most highly-anticipated events at this annual celebration.
