You have heard the stories and have maybe worked up the nerve to visit the park, but have you ever walked along Sica Hollow State Park’s spooky Trail of the Spirits? While the name is scary-sounding enough, the story behind the area makes it even creepier, making it one of the most haunted trails in the country:

Located in northeast South Dakota, Sica Hollow State Park is a beautiful and historic area that was once inhabited by the Santee Sioux, who deemed the area evil after experiencing numerous morbidities.

Translating to “bad or evil” in Santee Sioux, Sica Hollow is said to have once been home to the spirit Wakantanka, who sent a messenger to kill all who inhabited the land, which - at that time - was the peaceful tribe.

If that wasn’t scary enough, the Sioux also claimed to have seen the springs gushing with blood, a story that has been passed down through several generations.

In more recent years, Sica Hollow has been the location of other strange occurrences, including Big Foot sightings and the mysterious disappearances of visitors who vanished without a trace.

Do you dare visit Sica Hollow? If so, you will want to take the aptly named Trail of the Spirits, which is absolutely stunning but may reveal some spooks along the way (a la the sound of screams and the feeling you are being watched when no one was there).

The Trail of the Spirits is a .5-mile interpretative trail and features a thick canopy of trees, ample wildlife sightings, and even rustic bridges.

How could something so allegedly haunted be so enchanting?
