Ever feel like you’ve done all there is to do in the Empire State? There’s always more in store! Winter can be tough here. The cold weather has us all wanting to bundle up indoors, but there are plenty of outside winter activities in New York worth checking out. While the zoo is typically a warm weather outing, it can be just as enjoyable in the cold. Snow often has the animals feeling playful and more lively. And, if you’re at Utica Zoo, there’s an additional activity in store for you besides observing the animals. You can explore a trail around the zoo via snowshoe, either by renting snowshoes on site or bringing your own. There’s no better way to feel like an adventurer than by trekking through a snowy trail!

The Utica Zoo is an AZA-accredited zoo in Utica’s Roscoe Conkling Park. It was founded in 1914 and houses over 200 animals. It’s a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.

But did you know that, weather permitting, you can snowshoe in the zoo? You can either bring your own or rent them from the zoo.

The North Trek Fitness Trail winds through part of the zoo and is the zoo that’s open for snowshoeing.

Snowshoeing through a zoo is one of our favorite winter activities in New York. It can be exhausting, but it’s a great workout and so much fun.

Utica Zoo/Facebook Since the snow is typically packed pretty tight, you are welcome to walk the trail without snowshoes as well!

A zoo admission ticket is required to enter the snowshoeing trail. You can either view the animals first and then head down the snowshoeing trail or vice versa.

The snowshoeing trail will take you past a few of the animals’ enclosures! You’ll get to see the Canadian lynxes, Mexican wolves, and Arctic foxes.
