A great first stop during your visit to Vicksburg is the Old Depot Museum. It was built in 1904. Today, it houses a fantastic museum that will give you a great overview of the area’s history before you continue on.

Vicksburg City Hall was built in 1902 in Neoclassical style.

The Old Courthouse Museum was once known as the Warren County Courthouse. It was built in 1859, just before the Civil War began. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968.

The Balfour House is a mansion that was built in 1835. It’s one of several historic homes that visitors can tour in Vicksburg.

The Beidenharn Coca-Cola Museum is another interesting historical stop. This factory is the first place that Coca-Cola was ever bottled.

The most important, biggest, and most interesting historical attraction in Vicksburg, though, is Vicksburg National Military Park. This is the site of the Civil War Battle of Vicksburg in 1863. This battle was a major turning point in the war.

In this vast military park, you’ll find information about how the battle unfolded and monuments to the lives that were lost during this battle. There is a monument for each state that participated. This is the Iowa State Memorial.

The USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum is also inside the park. This ship was one of the first ironclad battleships. It sank on December 12, 1862. It was raised from the bottom of the Mississippi River in 1964 and was restored in the 1970s.

Vicksburg National Military Cemetery is also within the park. Approximately 18,244 Civil War soldiers are buried here; 12,954 are unidentified.
