While we may have grunted and groaned about it when we were young and in school, today we love learning about New Hampshire’s history. And lucky for us, there’s plenty of it! From museums to historic homes, it feels like there are stories related to just about everything here. And that includes the oldest inn in New Hampshire!
The town of Hancock, located in the Monadnock Region, is one of our favorite small towns in the state. And it’s also home to New Hampshire’s oldest inn.

It all started in 1878 when Noah Wheeler arrived in town. Roads were just being built, giving people more freedom to move around. And as service workers arrived in Hancock, access to things like rum became more important.

While there were plenty of taverns in town, Noah Wheeler was the first to offer accommodation. While it operated under a different name back then, this was the very same spot that operates today as The Hancock Inn!

Each one has its own bathroom and there are modern touches like televisions integrated in a way that makes them feel almost unnoticeable.

We also love The Hancock Inn for the attached restaurant, The Fox Tavern. Stop in even if you’re not a guest staying overnight and you’ll enjoy one of the best home cooked meals in the area.

While you can certainly stay longer, we love the idea of a weekend trip. The Hancock Inn offers just the right level of cozy to keep you wanting to stay in. But the town offers just enough charm that you’ll want to do some exploring, too.
